Shimano Gearing Hierarchy

broken image

Shimano reckon that most people buying a Tiagra-equipped bike probably won't be racing it and won't need the really high gears. The 52/36t, 50/34t and 50/39/30t triple chainset options still provide plenty of range, and 52/36t is just fine for most racers. Shimano GRX is a component series designed for gravel and adventure riders, bikepackers and cyclocross racers, providing a wide spread of possible builds including 10-speed and 11-speed setups, 1x and 2x drivetrains, mechanical and electronic shifting, wide-range or close-range gears, and dropper post integration.

Shimano pioneered the STI (Shimano Total Integration) lever, which is the most commonly used lever today. The ingenious system allows the user to change gears up or down and brake with one hand. The right-hand lever controls the rear derailleur and front brake (brake orientation can change based on country), while the left-hand lever controls. The Shimano component range starts with the budget-priced Claris, which is usually found on the most affordable bikes available. Claris is an 8-speed system (eight gears at the rear) combined with either a double or triple crankset (two or three gears at the front). Buy Shimano Groupset: Claris if you're on a budget.

Shimano groupsets are the most popular in the world, and you really can't go wrong with them when it comes to balancing performance and value.
